This course provides a comprehensive study of the teaching strategies and
materials that are appropriate for teaching reading and writing in grades
five through eight. Special emphasis
is placed on reading instruction in the content areas. The course content is adaptable to
secondary content area reading as well.

An examination of the curriculum
and the responsibilities of teaching in the middle grades. This class addresses the cognitive,
physical, and psychosocial development of young adolescents and the
curriculum components recommended by the National Middle School Association
in its publication, This We Believe. This class is part of the fall Middle Grades
Methods Block.
