Dr. Awang received a Bachelor of Science in Administrative Services Training, a Master of Science and a PhD in Workforce Education and Development with a concentration in management from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale under the supervision of Drs. Marcia A. Anderson and Clora Mae Baker.

She is a full professor and program coordinator of Corporate Communication and Technology. She is the 2015 EKU's Critical Thinking Teacher of the Year. She received the national Delta Pi Epsilon research award in 2002, Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation research award in 2002, and Outstanding Master’s Thesis research award in 1998 both from the Illinois Business Education Association (IBEA). She was also a recipient of the Outstanding Teaching and Service Award from the University of Technology MARA, Malaysia. She was a two-time inductee to the Illinois Writers' Hall of Fame for business education. She received the Jack L. Dyer’s Excellence in Teaching Award from Eastern Kentucky University in 2011.

During her 27 years of teaching abroad and in the United States, she has conducted research in the areas of workplace and technology skills, technology-based education, organizational communication and diversity, ethical communication, cultural intelligence, and business curriculum assessment, training, and development. She has published articles in journals such as the Delta Pi Epsilon Journal, Business Teacher Education Journal, Journal of Case Studies in Accreditation and Assessment, Information Technology and Learning Performance Journal, Journal for Global Business Education, International Journal for Business Education, National Business Education Forum, Journal of International Business and Cultural Studies, and the National Business Education Yearbook.  

In addition to teaching international business communication, professional communication, managerial report writing, entrepreneurship, business research methods, integrated corporate communication, and web design, she is a faculty senator who is involved with the 2016-2020 Strategic Planning Team for Faculty Leadership, Faculty Evaluations Appeals, Faculty Grievance, Faculty on Dismissal, Business Curriculum, Information Technology, Teacher Education Assessment, Teacher Education Curriculum, Diversity Council, International Education, Academic Program Review, Promotion and Tenure, Post Tenure Review, and AACSB Accreditation Committees for Eastern Kentucky University.

She has served as president, vice-president/program chair, and secretary-treasurer of the Association for Business Communication Southwest U.S. region. She co-chaired the 2011 Association for Business Communication International Convention in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She has served as chair for the Technology Board of Association for Business Communication International.

Additionally, she has served as a member of an editorial review board for Delta Pi Epsilon's Journal of Applied Research in Business Instruction, a national honorary graduate society publication in research and teaching for business, and the National Business Education Association publication.
