Course Title: Human Anatomy
Course Instructor: Dr. Suzanne Byrd, Cammack 221, phone: 622-1712
E-mail: suzanne.byrd@eku.edu
Text: There are 2 required books for this course:
1. HUMAN ANATOMY, Laboratory Manual and Lecture Workbook (Farrar and Byrd)
2. HUMAN ANATOMY, 6th edition(Van de Graaf) or any comparable Human Anatomy textbook.

Attendance: Attendance is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! Since the test questions will be taken from the
material covered in lecture and lab, it is a REALLY GOOD idea to attend each lecture and lab meeting
and take thorough notes. Attendance will be recorded in each lab section. You may NOT switch lab
sections without permission of the lab instructor. According to departmental rules, you will automatically
receive an "" for the course is you are absent from lab more than 3 times.
Exams: There will be a total of 8 tests (including the final) given in this course [4 written exams covering
the lecture material, 3 lab exams, and a final exam]. Each test is worth 100 points. There are
makeup tests. If you miss a test for ANY reason other than a valid university excused absence, then the
FINAL EXAM will automatically be counted twice to replace the missed test. In the interest of fairness to
everyone in the course, if you miss a lab exam, you MAY NOT drop in on a later lab to take that exam.
If you have not missed any tests but performed poorly on a particular test, the final exam will be counted
twice to replace the lowest test grade. The final exam is COMPREHENSIVE and everyone MUST take
the final exam, regardless of their grade.
Spelling: On laboratory tests, you will be required to identify anatomical structures and spell them CORRECTLY. One-half point will be deducted for each incorrectly spelled anatomical term.
Course Grades: 90.00% - 100.00% = A
80.00% - 89.99% = B
70.00% - 79.99% = C
60.00% - 69.99% = D
<60.00% = F
There are NO CURVES given on any exams or for this course.
DROPPING THE COURSE: The last day to drop this course without receiving a grade is Tuesday,
October 14, 2003.

BIO 171 TERMINOLOGY
Anatomical position- Erect posture, feet together, arms by the sides with palms facing forward.
Superior (cranial)- Towards the head.
Inferior (caudal)- Towards the feet.
Anterior (ventral)- Towards the front of the body.
Posterior (dorsal)- Towards the back of the body.
Medial- Closer to the mid-sagittal plane of the body.
Lateral- Farther from the mid-sagittal plane of the body.
Proximal- Closer to the axial skeleton.
Distal- Farther from the axial skeleton.
Superficial- Closer to the surface of the body.
Deep- Farther from the surface of the body.
Adduction- Moving toward the midline of the body in the coronal plane
Abduction- Moving away from the midline of the body in the coronal plane.
Flexion- Movement in the sagittal plane usually involving a decrease in the angle of a joint.
Extension- Movement in the sagittal plane usually involving increasing the angle of a joint.
Pronation- Medial rotation of the forearm in such a manner that the palm comes to face posteriorly (or downward).
Supination- Lateral rotation of the forearm in such a manner that the palm faces anteriorly (or upward).
Prone- Body lying face downward.
Supine- Body lying flat with the face upward.
Ipsilateral- Same side of the body.
Contralateral- Opposite sides of the body.
Bilateral- Both sides of the body.
Inversion- Movement of the foot so the sole faces medially.
Eversion- Movement of the foot so the sole faces laterally.
Sagittal- Vertical plane passing through the body dividing it into unequal right and left parts.
Mid-Sagittal (or Median sagittal)- Vertical plane passing through the center of the body dividing it into equal right and left halves.
Frontal (Coronal)- Vertical plane passing through the body dividing it into anterior and posterior parts.
Transverse (horizontal)- Perpendicular to the coronal and sagittal planes, cutting the
body into superior and inferior parts.
