My research program at EKU is embedded in evolutionary biology, utilizing a combination of field investigations, laboratory methodologies and computer-assisted analyses.  At present there are three major thematic platforms:

1)  molecular evolution of the plastid DNA-dependant RNA polymerase core enzyme complex in the flowering plant family Geraniaceae.

2)  population biology of the endangered Short's goldenrod (Solidago shortii T & G), and the common sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.).

3)  phylogenetic investigations in the genus Solidago (Asteraceae) and the family Sarraceniaceae.

These efforts are facilitated by an internal  bioinformatic facility in the Department of Biological Sciences developed and supported by the NIH/NCRR Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN) grant #P20 14681.  A renewal of our grant has facilitated the development of a joint Master's degree program in Bioinformatics between the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Computer Science at EKU and the Department of Computer Science at the University of Louisville.  This award also provides continued support for our Bioinformatic Facility, our research programs, and opportunities for student and faculty research.

-We have been assisted in our Short's goldenrod population biology efforts by Girl Scout Troop 1265.
