Research Facilities
MCMB Lab:
The MCMB lab of 345 ft.2 (adjacent to the BioInformatic Facility) contains an array of equipment with an emphasis on the PCR methodology.
Temperature Cyclers:
MJ Research PTC 100 w/ 200 ml 96 well capacity
Applied Biosystems GeneAmp 9700 w/200 ml 96 well capacity
MJ Research Tetrad DNA Engine 2 is equipped with 2 blocks of 200 ml 96 well capacity, 2 blocks w/500 ml 60 well capacity, and 2 blocks w/ 384 well microtiter plate capacity. The Tetrad Engine 2 can simultaneously accommodate 4 blocks and has temperature gradient capacity.
Perkin-Elmer GeneAmp 2400 w/ 200 ml 24 well capacity is housed in a separate lab for teaching purposes.
Photo-documentation:
Kodak EDAS 290 system with a variable intensity UV transilluminator
Dell Workstation 340 PC with appropriate analytical software
Quantitation of PCR products is available through an Amersham GeneQuant Pro.
Additional Equipment:
The lab also contains 2 bacteriological incubators, two Eppendorf microfuges, an MJ Research UV workstation (for sterile PCR conditions), a New Brunswick Innova 2100 platform shaker, a -20o freezer and a refrigerator/freezer. A PowerMacintosh G4 is integrated with a SmartScan 3600 slide scanner and an HP ScanJet 7400c flat bed scanner. The MCMB unit also has a Beckman L8-80 ultracentrifuge with the following rotors: SW26, SW40, SW60, vTi65, and vTi80. Desktop centrifuge include a Beckman refrigerated TJ-6, an IEC Centra 8, another IEC benchtop clinical centrifuge and a floor model clinical centrifuge. Two circulating refrigerated water baths, two additional bacteriological incubators, an electroporator, a shaking water bath, two upright -20oC freezers, a -70oC freezer, 2 additional refrigerator/freezers and a benchtop laminar flow hood complete our equipment holdings.
Gel Electrophoresis and Spectroscopy Lab:
A third lab of 345 ft.2 is dedicated for gel electrophoresis and spectroscopy. Sets of mini, midi and large gel boxes and 4 low voltage and 2 high voltage power supplies are readily available for all investigators. This room also contains a refrigerator/freezer, a microfuge, magnetic stir plates, a pH meter, 2 UV/visible light spectrophotometers, a water bath and microwave oven, a vacuum drying oven, 2 clinical benchtop centrifuges, and general labware.
The Department also maintains a -4oC cold room, a walk-in 37oC incubator room, and a greenhouse with space available for research projects.
The bioinformatic facility offers full computational support for all research applications.
