Discussion of how to study, what to  consider in choosing a profession, and what career opportunities exist for graduates from the College's  programs. Additional topics include University regulations, publications, and support areas. Open to all  students during their first two semesters of enrollment at EKU; beyond that open to students with fewer  than 30 semester hours earned.

Content
:
This course is designed to help the new Art and Design student to understand the basic workings of the Eastern Kentucky University, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Art and Design.

On completion of this one credit hour course you should be able to schedule your classes for each semester, drop and add courses, and make long tern plans for necessary requirements for graduation.

In addition you will learn how to use the library, computer services, and find out where to receive help such as guidance counseling, tutoring, and medical care.

This is basically a lecture class. Overall class structure will consist of lectures, field trips (as  necessary), presentations, and outside assignments (homework). The lectures will mostly concern the  structure of the institution and how to effectively schedule your academic work. Field trips will  generally be on campus - the Library Orientation is a typical field trip.   Presentations will be made by  faculty and student representatives of various departmental areas like Painting, Printmaking, Ceramics, Interior Design, etc. Presentations will also cover departmental resources/ functions like the  Fred P. Giles Gallery and the Art Student Association.  Outside assignments, besides typical homework,  will include visits to art events.

Course Objectives
1.     to help you become familiar with the university policies and curricula
2.     to help you become familiar with requirements for the art & design major
3.     to assist you in career planning and/or planning for graduate school
4.     to help you understand which courses you need to take, and which courses             you might choose to take to pursue your career goals
5.     to provide information about the campus resources that are available to help             you, both academically and personally
6.     to provide a place to ask questions and talk to other first-year students
7.     to give you the opportunity to interact with your advisor

The Deal

Students are expected to attend all regularly scheduled classes for the duration of the class. Late arrival to class will  not be tolerated-this faculty member reserves the right to close and lock the classroom door after a reasonable length  of time has passed. A student who is locked out will be counted as absent for the day. Since the nature of studio  classes require a maximum of individual contact time coupled to a limited number of hours of lab time, each student  will be expected to stay and work in class for the entire class period or until otherwise dismissed. Late arrival or early  departure will be considered a partial (1/2) absence. Departmental policy will be observed for attendance. There will  be no smoking in my classes. Any student arriving in class intoxicated will be immediately ejected from the  class and disciplined in accordance with university policy.

Do not call me at home. If a student needs to contact me, do so either at my office, e-mail (herb.goodman@eku.edu)  or leave a message for me in the Department of Art office. The ONLY justification for contacting me at my home is a  dire (i.e.: the computer lab is on fire) emergency.  This faculty member spends approximately 10 hours on campus  daily -- If you need to find me, you probably can.  If you have a late project, grade dispute, or are sick-- contact me at  school, I keep no records or schedule books at my home and will be of no use to you there.

Projects/papers are expected to be turned in on time, if a project not submitted, it will be given an F until handed in.  The project/paper must be completed as a requirement for the course. Late projects are given, at best, a grade of D.  If you do not understand any part of this document it is your responsibility to ask me for clarification.  If you are registered with the Office of Services for Individuals with Disabilities, please make an appointment with the  course instructor to discuss any accommodations you need. If you need academic accommodations and are not  registered with the Office of Services for Individuals with Disabilities, please contact the Office directly either in  person on the first floor of the Turley House or by telephone at (859) 622-1500. Upon individual request, this syllabus  can be made available in alternative forms. This syllabus is a guide and subject to change as considered necessary and appropriate by the instructor at any time  during the semester.  Changes should be minor and due to circumstances we cannot predict.

Changes to syllabus will be announced in class and on our class web space.
