Special Interests

Early in my career my principal interests were the philosophy of mind and early modern philosophy. In my early years at EKU I developed an interest in computer programming, in part through my work with Frank Williams on the development of computer software for teaching informal logic.

Although these interests are still with me, in the last 10 years I have become mainly interested in questions concerning morality and happiness. My major focus has been on the recent developments in virtue ethics with its return to the ethical teachings of Aristotle.

Aside from these interests my teaching responsibilities in our honors program have led me to participate with students on numerous presentations at regional and national honors meetings on subjects ranging from pedagogical issues to the French Revolution.

My interests in ethics have recently begun to merge with my interest in early modern philosophy, for I am currently engaged in a project to incorporate the moral philosophies of philosophers like Descartes and Leibniz into a traditional early modern philosophy course that has tended to focus exclusively on metaphysics and epistemology.
