What are the objectives of Eastern's HR Program?
To
provide students with a comprehensive coverage of HR topics.
To
facilitate the development of realistic management and HR skills and perspectives.
To
offer students a thorough, well-rounded business education.
To
prepare students to successfully pass the Human Resource Certification
Exam.
What is the HR curriculum at Eastern?
Eastern's HR curriculum consists of these layers:
HR
courses
A
well-rounded and comprehensive array of business courses
General
education courses
HR students take the following five courses which begin with a survey course covering the entire field and continue with four advanced courses which provide comprehensive coverage of each of the major topics areas within HR.
MGT 320 -- Human Resource Management
(the introductory HR course). Survey of principles and
practices in the areas of human resource planning, job analysis, recruitment,
selection, training and development, performance appraisal, compensation,
labor relations, safety and health, equal employment opportunity, and personnel
research.
MGT 410 -- Labor Relations.
Study
of labor-management relationships, including union organization campaigns,
contract negotiations, grievance and arbitration procedures, labor-management
cooperation, positive employee relations, and union-free work environments.
MGT 425 -- Compensation Management.
Advanced
study of the human resource function of employee compensation. Topics
include job analysis and evaluation, compensation surveys, pay structures,
budgeting, pay for performance systems, benefits administration, and federal
regulation of compensation management.
MGT 440 -- Human Resource Development.
Advanced
study of human resource functions aimed directly at enhancing organizational
effectiveness. Topics include training needs analysis; training program
design, implementation, and evaluation; performance management and appraisal;
and costing human resource development programs.
MGT 445 -- Employee Recruitment
and Selection.
Advanced
study of the human resource function of staffing. Topics include
recruitment, the design and implementation of effective selection procedures
which facilitates organizational effectiveness and which complies with
federal/state requirements.
The advanced HR courses (MGT 410,
425, 440 and 445) are designed to provide students with a comprehensive
exposure to given topic areas while also providing practical application
of course material to realistic workplace contexts. Extensive use
of team and individual projects -- of the types which students will face
on the job -- are incorporated into course requirements to insure that
students gain practical skills and insights in each area of HR expertise.
Business Courses
HR students take the same "business
core" classes which are required of all College of Business students.
Included in the core are courses in accounting, finance, management, marketing,
computer systems, business law, business communications and economics,
and business policy and strategy.
General Education Courses
Eastern requires that all students complete a common set of general education requirements, including coursework in 19 categories, including humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics.
