John V. Singleton, 83, Albion, prominent Republican and former sheriff of Noble County, died at 6:40 a.m. today in McCray Hospital where he had been a patient for 10 days. Mr. Singleton was also well-known as an auctioneer, coming to Albion from Decatur in 1914. He served four two-year terms as sheriff. Mr. Singleton was a member of the Albion Masonic Lodge and of the First United Methodist Church, Albion. Born in Adams County, Nov. 15, 1883, he was the son of William and Abigail Warner Singleton. In 1909 he married Edith Cook, who survives. Mr. Singleton was the father of three sons and seven daughters: John W. and Hubert of Albion, Arthur of South Bend, Mrs. Irma Strong and Mrs. Gloria Portmess of Albion, Mrs Lelah Walters of Durango, Colo., Mrs. Phyllis Braa of Powell Wym., Mrs. Helen Harris of Lake Charles, La., Mrs. Edith Welling of Midway, Pa., and Mrs. Mary Rose Stauffer of Fort Wayne. There are 31 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the Bonham and Miser Funeral Home, Albion, after 7 p.m. Saturday until noon Monday, when the body will be removed to the First United Methodist Church, where services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Reverend Jual Evans will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Members of the family have requested that memorials be given as donations to the church organ fund.

Mrs. Edith E. Singleton, 84, Albion, widow of former Noble County sheriff and auctioneer John V. Singleton, died at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Home after a two-month illness. Mrs. Singleton was born Jan. 29, 1890 in Adams County, Indiana, moving from Decatur go Albion in 1914. She was married in April, 1909. Her parents, Gottlieb and Charlotte (Bartling) Cook, preceded her in death. Survivors include three sons, Hubert, Albion, Arthur, South Bend, and John W., Albion; seven daughters, Mrs. Allen (Erma(sic)) Strong, Mrs. Robert (Lelah) Waters, Durango, Colo., Mrs. Ted (Phyllis) Braa, Powell, Who., Mrs. Allie (Helen) Harris, Lake Charles, La., Mrs. Howard (Edith) Welling, Lynchburg, Va., Mrs. Robert (Mary) Stouffer, Fort Wayne, and Mrs. Bruce (Gloria) Portmess, Albion; one brother, David, Berne; 31 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Services will be 2 pm. Saturday at the Asbury United Methodist Church, Albion, with Reverend Kenneth Foulke and Reverend Howard Welling officiating. Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetery. Friends may call at Brazzell Funeral Home after 7 p.m. tonight and after 3 p.m. Friday. The body will be taken to the church to lie in state at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Preferred memorials are to the Asbury Methodist Church.

Hubert E. Singleton, 82, of Albion, died at 1 p.m. Monday in Veterans Administration Medical Center in Fort Wayne, following an extended illness. He was born July 9, 1910 in Decatur to John and Edith (Cook) Singleton. Nearly a lifetime Albion resident, Mr. Singleton was retired from radio and television sales and service in Albion. He was a 70-year member of Asbury United Methodist Church, a member and chaplain of the American Legion post in Albion, and a charter member of Albion Lions Club. Surviving are five sisters, Mrs. Allen (Irma) Strong of Bigfork, Mont., Mrs. Ted (Phyllis) Braa of Powell, Wyo., Mrs. Howard (Edith) Welling of Lynchburg, Va., Mary Rose Stouffer of Bisbee, Ariz., and Mrs. Bruce (Gloria) Portmess of Albion; and a brother, Arthur Singleton of South Bend. A brother and two sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Asbury United Methodist Church, Albion, with the Rev. Evelyn Myers officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion. Visitation is from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday in Brazzell Funeral Home, Albion, and one hour before services at the church on Thursday. Preferred memorials are to Asbury United Methodist Church's chancel choir.
